Erich Gstrein is director of the Smart Agent Technologies studio and the scientist in charge for research projects concerning personalization and recommender technologies. He has many years of experience in the development of commercial and research oriented personalization systems.

Erich Gstrein holds a PhD degree in Computer Science. His current research interests are collaborative filtering and knowledge-based recommender systems for the semantic web. From 2006-2008 he guided the development of personalization solutions for VeriSign Communications Gmbh. From 2004-2006 Erich Gstrein headed the Personalization&Datamining team of Three United mobile solutions ag. From 2000-2004 he has been the head of the artificial intelligence group at sysis interactive simulations ag (sysis) and the general technical manager of the IST project NECA.

Until 2000 he was chief architect and the head of the implementation team of a large mission critical client-server project for the Austrian saving banks at SPARDAT. From 1992-1993 Erich Gstrein defined and implemented an object oriented software developing process for AT&T Austria.

From 1989 - 1992 he was chief software architect/designer of N'Joy at Vienna Software Publishing - an award winning office automation system (Best International Product at Comdex 1992) for OS/2.
