The Business View
From a business point of view, offering recommendations in that way can be seen as a mass market approach, especially focusing on small and medium e/m-shops which are currently kept from using personalization due to high initial costs. The advantages of this approach are
- a new personalization market (small, medium portals) can be entered at low costs
- personalization is seen as a service and not as an investment - more diverse business models are possible
- viral marketing, based on a good web appearance is a very cost-effective alternative to standard sales
- technical support is reduced to one installation (server farm)
- consulting services concerning personalization can be offered, too
The Technical View
A set of stable, state-of-the-art recommendation functions (e.g. shopping-cart analysis as provided by Amazon) are offered via WEB service technologies to be easily integrated in e- and m- portals. The load of the system is manageable due to massive use of (offline) pre-calculated recommendations.
