Praktika: User Experience Design for the "Web of Needs"

Number of places: 1-2

The Web as related to commerce suffers from a fundamental asymmetry. While there is a great number of commercial offers available, consumer needs are rarely represented explicitly.

Thus, the most widely applied process of connecting the prospective consumer of a resource with its supplier is Web search. We are developing an infrastructure that will allow consumers to describe and publish their needs and have them interact with offers in a semi-automatic process, reducing the need for manual search and enabling a wide range of unprecedented applications.

The main focus of this part of the project is to find out how people structure their needs and how we can use this knowledge to build cognitive and intelligent user-interfaces for an ""owner application"" (a webbased GUI interface that should allow user to create, publish and manage need objects) for of the Web of Needs - independent from domain-specific requirements.

How we can an intelligent and learning user interface support a user step by step in defining needs in different contexts?

The result should be a clickable GUI prototype.

Expected Qualification /Requirements for the students:

Creativity, desireable are skills in creating clickable GUI prototypes for applications. Interest in combining knowledge of Cognitive Science & Psychology.

Praktika: Semantic Web :: Need Descriptions in the "Web of Needs"

Number of places: 1-2

Within the project "Web of Needs" we are developing an infrastructure that will allow consumers to describe and publish their needs and have them interact with offers in a semi-automatic process, reducing the need for manual search and enabling a wide range of unprecedented applications.

In this part of the project we want to find out how laypersons can be enabled to describe their needs with semantic Web technologies so that they become machine-readable. We envision a Web based tool that allows for intuitive and playful interaction and produces consistent RDF, drawing from available Web ontologies. The result should be a concept document outlining the technical approach and a GUI prototype conveying the interaction concept.

Expected Qualification /Requirements for the students:

Interest in semantic Web technologies and user interaction design.

Praktika: Communication Protocols for Cooperative Processes in the "Web of Needs"

Number of places: 1-2

Within the project "Web of Needs" we are developing an infrastructure that will allow consumers to describe and publish their needs and have them interact with offers in a semi-automatic process, reducing the need for manual search and enabling a wide range of unprecedented applications.
In this part of the project, we want to focus on cooperative processes enabled by the infrastructure (e.g. a small-scale grass-roots movement for cleaning up the local park). We are interested in finding out which communication processes are relevant and should be integrated into the communication protocols of the infrastructure. The result should be a concept document detailing the theory of cooperative processes and a suggestion of the processes to be integrated into the communication protocols.

Expected Qualification /Requirements for the students:

Interest in cooperative processes and cooperation protocols.
